Almost the last one-week torrent rain is pouring in many parts of South India. The worst affected areas are near the beaches and lowland areas. In 2015 sever rain hit Tamil Nadu especially the capital city which is Chennai. In that more than 500 people dead (listed ones) unlisted should be 5000, more than 1.8 lakh million people displaced and lost their belongings. Total calculated damages are 1 trillion USD. 

Now in the last one week south India is seeing continual rain falling. All the streets and roads of many cities are flooded. Have you ever thought about the homeless people sleeping on the streets? Where will they sleep in this kind of situation?. This kind of natural calamity claims more lives of homeless and destitute people especially old and sick in the streets . Metro cities in India are the survival place for many poor, old & sick people. We have home to sleep, any bad condition we can manage, but think of the disabled on the streets, blind on the streets. How can they go to a safe place in these kinds of conditions? The truth is many die and they are unaccounted.

A brave police woman saved a young man who was sleeping in the graveyard. Appreciation rising from social media. This person is lucky to get saved but, do you know many such helpless people die in unnoticed ways and pass this world without any trace?  For this kind of people, the government should take sufficient measures to save them and give them a joyful ending.  

Yes, our NGO wants to be part of this movement to save lives of the neglected and give joy of happy ending to the neglected people on the streets. Soon, we are going to start a home for the disabled and sick old destitute in Puducherry. Like minded people are welcome to serve and support.

A 34 years old Saravanan reached Pondicherry 10 years back. He became an orphan after the death of his parents. He had one elder brother, but he too died in the road accident. The in beginning days, he knew no one in Pondicherry, so he started to collect trash on the streets to sell and survive. Later time, he got a job in the recyclable trash-collecting shoppe. Faithfully, he continued his work and lived with his earnings. One day after loading a small truck of trash, he accompanied the vehicle. Unfortunately, in one particular place the small truck over tuned. Saravanan fell and his head hit right on the stone became unconscious. After, 20 days he opened his eyes but could not see anything. Later, the nurse told him what had happed and how he reached the government hospital. Now, due to major head injuries, he lost complete vision in one eye and another just 5% present vision. Now he doesn’t have any employment or any support from his employer, he is struggling on the streets and living along with other beggars.  

After, knowing his pathetic condition Snehan NGO decided to help him in taking him to a private hospital to see the possibilities of getting back his eyesight. 

On 16^th of October 2021, kanthari provided us a place in the heart of the city to demonstrate my learned social business skills. 27 participants from different countries and states participated with unique ideas and products. This day was a bit unfortunate for all the kanthari participants because many parts of Kerala had heavy and continual rain. The exhibition stalls were underwater, at Jawahar Bala Bhavan, in Trivandrum. Since Snehan motive was on promoting organization social venture; Anumuthu did not stop putting up Snehan organization stall. With the help of two volunteers named Mr.Ananthan and Ms.Haritha, Anumuthu put up the stall. Anumuthu kept 2 of 3/5 feet banner and 8 A3 posters, which gave a full outline of Snehan organization and the humble work that he does at Pondicherry.

In the stall, Anumuthu kept the eco-friendly cotton products that are made by Snehan beneficiaries. The visitor’s presence was not as expected but whoever passed Snehan stall, Anumuthu pitched about Snehan activities and how it brings value in the lives of deprived people. Also he talked about the environment, how Snehan cotton product promotes and supports the environments for the future generation.  Snehan had around 200 visitors, Snehan messages were passed to them in all possible manner. We got one link person called Mr. Mathew Jacobs, who gave his suggestion to get linked for volunteers across India. They are available on request through a platform called ConnectFor (www.connectfor.org). Overall it was a productive day for our organization.

A woman comes back home, hungry and exhausted after a long day of work. Two of her kids are also hungry and crying for food. A little while later the mother opens her cupboard to pick up some money to buy provisions for a family meal but she finds only the empty money purse. Can the money be safe, if you live with an alcoholic person? What would be the priority for a drug addict, family, or his happiness?

Pondicherry is a tourist place, where people come to enjoy their holidays with cheap and best food and liquor. The more affected ones are the local men. Thousands of family women suffer all through their life because of their husbands who are addicted to alcohol. The family women are pressured to survive along with their kids. They can’t feed their kids, have no proper clothes nor shelter, huge struggle in giving education, many kids are school dropouts. These men coolly drink and drink and die before their time. The victim is the family woman and her kids. Who will take care of them?

In the year 2006, a team of us were at work collecting data on drug addicts around Hyderabad and in Secundrabad. My eyes fell on a person, who climbed on a fence and landed on the footpath. It was a summer mid-day, a beggar was napping under a tree on the footpath, this guy after jumping the fence, bent down put his hand on the pocket of the beggar took out all the money, and climbed back. This scene was seen by more than 3 dozen people but no one dared to question the thief or came forward to get that poor guy living. Do you know 99% of the homeless beggars face harassment, beatings, and looted every day by the local rowdies? My old beneficiary used to tell me that every day at night a team of boys would march about on the streets and wake him up for the money or cigarette, if they don’t give or even if they don’t have, these guys would beat this old man. Yes, this is the reality.

A 48 years old Murugan (name changed) was deserted by his family due to an extra-marital relationship by his wife.  He was depressed and ashamed to live in his village, reached Puducherry, he collects waste to make his living. He was sleeping in a particular street in the night, where a team of robbers came to robe his little, since he dint had more, he was beaten very badly; he was left with multiple injuries on the face and on the legs. Now he finds it difficult even to walk.  This kind of act not only happens to him but many around. How I wish, that we could give our voice to such kind.

After one-year-long famine (mean Covid-19) Snehan, starting its activities one by one. During the pandemic, we were severely affected and lacked for survival but somehow managed and pulled on till date because of loyal friends of Snehan. We are happy to update you, that our Earn-with Dignity project re-started today for two of our homeless beneficiaries. They come in the morning, take Eco-friendly products from the Snehan office, sell on the footpath and earn their income for self-reliance living. They take complete responsibility for the products and support Snehan in these income-generating activities. In coming days more shops on cycle would be around the city in Pondicherry.

Raju (name changed) 74 years old man struggles for his survival. Within a few hours of his birth, his mother died. Within two years his father married other women and separated Raju from his grandma, his only hope grandma too died when he was 10 years of age. Raju left alone and desperate for parental love and care, luckily one of his aunties came to help him in finding a hostel school. Raju felt alone in life, every month his peer’s parents used to come to visit their children with good food and eatables but for Raju no one. His loneliness never hindered his studies, he hardened his emotions and concentrated more on his studies. Successfully completed his schooling and college with a scholarship. But the society failed to recognize his hard work and his qualification. He failed almost in every attempt to get a government job, finally landed up in one Christian school, where they paid him a penny, he struggled for his survival all through his life. His Highest paid salary in 2007 was Rs.5000/-, he struggled even for basic needs. I feel, the society failed to understand him and the school treated him as worthless. His poverty life, could not give him the joy of family. In all his life he eats only hotel food. What a miserable life? If you were to be in his place, what you would have done? Injustice…

Snehan stands with such kind of people in society; we are helping him in whatever way possible. Hope to give a small job in Snehan, and help him to live a comfortable life, till his death.

Helping and empowering the women’s community is always a vital activity of Snehan. A huge number of families in India live in separation, poverty, and unemployment because of alcohol addiction by men. The women who are completely dependent on their husbands for their survival and their kids are left in wants for every little need. They don’t have a voice in the family, always overpowered and beaten by their husbands. Such kinds of women are selected and trained carefully in income generation activates such as tailoring, embroidery, and screen printing, the neediest ones are giving employment in Snehan income-generating activities, and others are left in independence to earn. Snehan is happy to proclaim that in-spite of great calamity and long lockdowns still, we managed to train 6 women, left them empowered in their family and in the society, especially two girls getting married with skills and self-confidence is great.

Mr. Poopathi, a 60-year-old man got out of his family due to family conflict, he got two sons settled, married, and they got children. He is never wanted nor celebrated in the family; therefore he came out of his family, was living on the street as a homeless person. He started his carrier as a bus conductor in private travels for many years. In one accident he lost his left eye and his job too. This incident made him unwanted and he could not get jobs easily. He had no other choice than to depend on the generosity of the by-passers on the streets. He struggled hard to meet his basic needs, as especially nights are spend fearfully on the streets.  Three years a go, Snehan founder was distributing food on the streets; Poopathi approached him for one pack. Anumuthu looked at him and told him why don’t you go to work? For this food, packs are meant for old and sick persons on street. Then he looked at Anumuthu and said, everyone, thinks I am old and disabled, with this conversation he opened his heart’s cry Snehan. Now, last one-year Mr.Poopathi is working happily with Snehan, his life changed, his appearance changed, and he eats with his earning. At Snehan’s for income-generating activities, he is the main in-charge person. We can see him smiling always and ready to do any work at any time. Snehan is happy to include the neglected and bring meaning to their lives.
