On September 1st, 2024, the kanthari 2024 participants, along with Sabriye Tenberken and the catalyst, visited the Snehan project in Pondicherry. A total of 27 passionate social change-makers from 11 countries came to see our project, learn from it, and provide their feedback. The visit from Sabriye and Tanja to Snehan Home was a blessing and an incredible experience.

We gave them a tour of our income-generating activities, such as the tailoring unit, where marginalized women are trained to make eco-friendly cotton products. These products are then sold on the streets of Pondicherry by rehabilitated grandpas.

I had almost two hours of interaction with the kanthari participants, during which I shared about Snehan Home, our mission to rescue old, abandoned, sick, and dying grandpas from the streets, and how we provide them with medical and residential care and support. They were deeply moved by our humble activities and had many questions to ask and learn from. It was a mutual learning experience for all of us.

kanthari alumni run organization KNOCK INDIA meet held at Pune from 27th of January to 30th of January 2023. Thirty participant from 30 state took part in this meeting, among them 20 were kanthari alumni. The meeting went on well, Mr. Karthikeyan from Sristi Village took one day session on efficient way of running organization and writing quality project proposal writing. During the session he mentioned one point that we should be “friend raiser” The successes of his amazing project is due to good friends of his. He believes good friends will build and run along with our vision and mission. His insight was an eye opening for many of us. During the stay at Pune, we meet other organizations and shared our thoughts and took their experience.

Anandan Selling Snehan Bags – at Jawahar Bala Bhavan Exhibition

On 16^th of October 2021, kanthari provided us a place in the heart of the city to demonstrate my learned social business skills. 27 participants from different countries and states participated with unique ideas and products. This day was a bit unfortunate for all the kanthari participants because many parts of Kerala had heavy and continual rain. The exhibition stalls were underwater, at Jawahar Bala Bhavan, in Trivandrum. Since Snehan motive was on promoting organization social venture; Anumuthu did not stop putting up Snehan organization stall. With the help of two volunteers named Mr.Ananthan and Ms.Haritha, Anumuthu put up the stall. Anumuthu kept 2 of 3/5 feet banner and 8 A3 posters, which gave a full outline of Snehan organization and the humble work that he does at Pondicherry.

In the stall, Anumuthu kept the eco-friendly cotton products that are made by Snehan beneficiaries. The visitor’s presence was not as expected but whoever passed Snehan stall, Anumuthu pitched about Snehan activities and how it brings value in the lives of deprived people. Also he talked about the environment, how Snehan cotton product promotes and supports the environments for the future generation. Snehan had around 200 visitors, Snehan messages were passed to them in all possible manner. We got one link person called Mr. Mathew Jacobs, who gave his suggestion to get linked for volunteers across India. They are available on request through a platform called ConnectFor (www.connectfor.org). Overall it was a productive day for our organization.

Social Business to Sustain Social Activities

One of the most sustainable activities for NGOs to continue their work is income-generating activities. Being a non-profit organization, we all depend on donors for every penny. Most of the time it’s not possible to raise money for every requirement. Even if we find a donor, they may not pay for that particular expense, which is very essential for the NGO to continue. In this situation what do we do? We either use personal money or brow from someone! Think of a social business, which can generate income for the organization that could meet the extra expense of your NGO and creates employment opportunities for your beneficiaries.

Yes, Mr.Anumuthu, founder of Snehan reached kanthari, on September 5th to learn entrepreneur skills or Social Business Activities. In this 40 day-long course, he would learn the social business aspect in-depth, what products to produce? What are the needs? What is the budget? How to brand? How to market? What is the cost price? What is the selling price? And who much is the profit margin? It’s very clear after the completion of the course, he would come back with basic knowledge to start the planned and learned social business.

Mr. Naresh Lingala is the Founder of tharunam, organization that works to prevent farmer’s suicide in Telangana. He volunteered with Snehan for 15 days for an experiential learning. He wanted to know and understand the reason behind homelessness in our country. During the stay, he had chance to interact with our Snehan beneficiaries. The practical experience gave him gave him more understanding towards homeless people. He too supported Snehan, in project writing and Snehan village mapping with clear descriptions. Seven months leadership training at kanthari came to conclusion with dream speech. The founder of Snehan Mr. Anumuthu participated along with other 23 participant from 12 different country, He expressed it’s one of the life changing experience that he had ever, he says.
