On September 1st, 2024, the kanthari 2024 participants, along with Sabriye Tenberken and the catalyst, visited the Snehan project in Pondicherry. A total of 27 passionate social change-makers from 11 countries came to see our project, learn from it, and provide their feedback. The visit from Sabriye and Tanja to Snehan Home was a blessing and an incredible experience.

We gave them a tour of our income-generating activities, such as the tailoring unit, where marginalized women are trained to make eco-friendly cotton products. These products are then sold on the streets of Pondicherry by rehabilitated grandpas.

I had almost two hours of interaction with the kanthari participants, during which I shared about Snehan Home, our mission to rescue old, abandoned, sick, and dying grandpas from the streets, and how we provide them with medical and residential care and support. They were deeply moved by our humble activities and had many questions to ask and learn from. It was a mutual learning experience for all of us.

Sick & disabled destitute man rescued for care and protection

Mr.Veerasamy 53 years old found on the streets of Pondicherry in disabled condition. He claims that he is from Kollimalai, Tamil Nadu. He is sick, unable to walk and does not have a sound mind.

He says his wife died of cancer and only son is paralyzed. He had a conflict with his daughter in-law, which made him leave his home. He was found in helpless condition dragging himself in the streets of Pondicherry. With the support of Grand Bazar Police, Snehan Home rescued him and admitted for residential care & support. He was welcomed at Snehan Home, cleaned him, changed his clothes and received nutritious food. On the next day he was taken to JIPMER Hospital for medical support, now he is under investigation.

Snehan Home supporting Murugesan at TB Hospital

For two months Mr.Murugesan went through a hard time in his life. Destitution, old age related sickness, hip bone fracture and added to these now suffering with TB. Almost every day we take him to hospital for medical support. Since one week he was having a mailed fever and cough, our staff was quick to discern and took him for a test. He was found to be positive and quickly he was taken to TB hospital for the admission. Now he is going through quality treatment. We wish him speedy recovery.

Snehan Home is very particular about every individual’s health, we always risk our life in order to save our beneficiaries. We are proud to be the first in Pondicherry, to run home for the neglected dying ones. We always appreciate our dedicated staff members for their best efforts.

Mr. Murugesan 82 year’s old grandpa is destitute. He doesn’t have any of his family members to care for him. He was rescued on the streets of Pondicherry near Government Hospital in an unstable condition. For one week, he was cared like newborn baby. Slowly he recovered his health back, amazingly with support he walks in the campus. He is going through constant pain due to crack in the upper left leg. When we approached GH doctors, they suggested us medical surgery, but due to his age and painful process, Mr.Murugesan himself was not willing. Most of the time, he is resting and some time he watches old movies. To recover from this injury, it may take up to six months. Every four days, we take him to medical support; it’s a long and painful process. Hopping he will have peaceful sun setting years at Snehan Home.

Sick and dying destitute is rescued by Snehan Home

Mr.Abdul Kabir 87 years old destitute thatha from Kerala. His married life ended in his youth. His wife, remarried someone else, he don’t have any children or family members. He was working in many places, now too old to get job. Few weeks’ back he fell down and broke his leg and hand, this incident crippled his mobility.

He could not get medical support because he doesn’t have any caretakers, lost his dignity; every natural need is done in one place. Can’t clean himself, hundreds of flies keep him busy during the day and in the night thousands of mosquitoes.

Snehan, rescued from the street, brought back his dignity at Snehan Home. Now he is at peace, comforted at all sides.

Abandoned paralysis man rescued at destitute home

Mr.Raja 57 years old man was abandoned on the street by his own family members due to paralysis. He is completely bedridden, can’t do anything by himself at the time of rescue. After knowing his physical condition, we hurried to bring him. Now he is comforted at Snehan Home. For few days he was disturbed, cried always. With our care & moral support he was filled with peace. A dedicated caretaker looks after him 24/7. They give him bath, clean his motion and urine. They feed him, give him medicines regularly. He gets regular medical, physiotherapy support. He is improving every day. Hope to see him walking soon… We see value in everyone…

Medical support to sick & injured homeless man

Mr.Varadharajan 61 years old comes from Chidambaram. His parents died many years back and had one elder sister; she too died few years back. When he was 22 years old, he got married but his marriage lasted only few months. This incident drowned him in sadness, but recovered in later days. He was working as a daily labour and living independent life for many years. As the days passed by his health condition did not allow him to go for labour work. Then for a survival he used to go for a marriage function as a servant. This work fetched little income but not regular. Therefore this profession made him to come on the streets to live as a homeless man. He used to work when there was work, if not beg on the street for his survival.

Week back, he fell down and his shoulder dislocated with injury. Snehan Home rescued him and admitted in Snehan Home from the street. At present he is undergoing medical treatment for his shoulder through our support. Once he recovers back his health, he may plan to go back to his own profession.

Blind destitute man is rescued from the streets

Mr.Suresh 74 years old man from Pondicherry. He was an electrician, had a family of his own. His wife died 25 years back due to accident; he was looking after his two sons. After few years he lost his control over his children and no news about them till date.

He left his profession and joined to work in the tea shop and worked almost 20 years near Government Hospital. As the days went by his health and eyes became dim and unstable. These dark days left him destitute; he survived with someone’s charity and used to sleep in near the beach.

Now he is admitted in Snehan Home for the residential care & support. In coming days, he will be going through medical surgery for left eye for better vision. The right eye is already lost completely and can’t be corrected with medical support. Hope he will go through safe medical surgery.

Snehan Home’s Life-Saving Mission for the Neglected

Mr.Kaliyaperumal 75 years old man was rescued by Snehan Home. He is quite sick, nothing can be traced about him, the patient is not able to talk, he has head injuries and other problems. After cleaning him, we took him and admitted at Government Hospital for the medical care. Snehan Home caretaker is supporting and attending him, hope he will come back recovered.
