A Peaceful Farewell for Gandhi Thatha – RIP

Snehan Home mourns the loss of Mr. Gandhi, a 75‑year‑old man who, though he had children, was sadly neglected. He came to us in poor health through the support of Mr. Ilaiyarasan’s family. With our care, he slowly recovered, but the pain of rejection and depression left him bedridden. Later, he suffered a stroke on his right side, which took away his speech and ability to communicate. From then on, he received our care around the clock, just like a baby.

Being diabetic, he developed pressure wounds on his leg. With regular medical dressing, most healed, but one worsened over time. His condition became weaker day by day. He could no longer eat or drink, even though he wished to. On Sunday 03-05-2026, we rushed him to Indira Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute for treatment. From there, he was transferred to the Government Hospital and later to JIPMER, where he passed away during medical care on 5^th of May 2026. Wit respect and dignity his body was buried.

Medical & residential support to disabled homeless man

One year back Santhosh met with accident and broke his leg, underwent surgery but still he is not fully recovered because no one to give him care & support. He came to Pondicherry for medication but because he doesn’t have caretakers with him, he could not get admitted in the hospital. He was found in Pondicherry bus stand with broken legs and unable to walk. Both the legs were infected with pus formation. The Orleanpet police called and requested us to rescue and rehabilitation him on 29th of May 2024. After rescue he was taken to Hospital for medical treatment and now undergoing medication along with residential care & support at Snehan Home. Once he recovers, he will be reunited with his family members.

Abandoned paralysis man rescued at destitute home

Mr.Raja 57 years old man was abandoned on the street by his own family members due to paralysis. He is completely bedridden, can’t do anything by himself at the time of rescue. After knowing his physical condition, we hurried to bring him. Now he is comforted at Snehan Home. For few days he was disturbed, cried always. With our care & moral support he was filled with peace. A dedicated caretaker looks after him 24/7. They give him bath, clean his motion and urine. They feed him, give him medicines regularly. He gets regular medical, physiotherapy support. He is improving every day. Hope to see him walking soon… We see value in everyone…

Sick dying man rescued from street and admitted in the hospital

Rajendran 60 year’s old man, was found sick for many days on the street. We received a call from Mr.Salim, he is a social worker who gives food for the neediest ones on the street. At the time of rescue the patient is completely bedridden. He claims that he is from Thanjavur; he is married and has two grownup children. He came out of his family twelve years back because of a fight, he never went back home to see his family. Snehan Home rescued him and admitted in Government Hospital with paid caretakers, after four days the patient was transferred to Government Chest Hospital because Mr.Rajendran was diagnosed with TB infection. Since one week the patient is going through treatment in the TB hospital, we have appointed paid caretakers with him 24/7. The hospital authorities mentioned to us that the treatment will be for 6 months but for the first two months the patient needs to be kept in isolation. Now, slowly Rajendran’s health is improving. For this patient we spent Rs.800/- (Caretakers remuneration per day). Would you support us to save his life? You’re most welcome to take-up even a single day’s expenses.

Basker reunited with his family members

Mr. Basker was rescued on the street of Pondicherry on 20^th of February 2024. At the time of our approach, he was sick, unable to walk and talk. He was found near the Government hospital, lying without anyone’s support. After rescue he was shifted to JIPMER hospital for medical support. Basker went through several medical tests in three weeks. Finally he was ruled out with a lump in his left lung. The medical team suspect that Basker may have cancer, but yet to conform with the biopsy test. Meanwhile, Snehan Home made several attempts to find his family, on 16^th of February 2024 we traced his younger brother in Chennai. After talking with his brother Mr.Venugopal Mobile: 9941410652. The Snehan team reunited Mr.Basker with his family with all the medical records and files. Snehan Home, agreed to support them in possible ways if they come for medical treatment in JIPMER. Means while we came to know that Mr.Basker got two sons and one daughter. He was happy to unite him with his family members once again, the family members too happy to see him after two years.

Snehan Home rescued 70 years old sick destitute grandpa from street

70 Years old Mani grandpa is forsaken by his family members two weeks back on the streets of Pondicherry. He claims that he is from Kallakurichi, he is not married and doesn’t have a family of his own. He lived an independent life, his brother’s sons used to support him rarely. For eight years he has suffered from a severe piles problem. Seldom had his brother’s sons take him to GH in Kallakurichi, since the treatment was not regular, he could not find healing. He struggles to sit or to do any kind of physical work. Because of his health condition, he won’t eat solid food but used to survive with liquid only. Since he was a thorn for his brother’s family, he was secretly brought to Pondicherry by his relatives and abandoned him. We Snehan spotted him on the streets near the bus stand, struggling physically, the pile was 5 inches out of his body 5 inches with severe infection. On 1^st of March 2024, through legal procedure, he was admitted to the GH in Pondicherry for the treatment. Now, Snehan Home is supporting him with caretaker and necessary needs.

51 Years old Basker is from Chengalpattu, he is married and has three children. He was kicked out of the family due to alcohol addiction. The family is very adamant not to take him back. Therefore, he was wandering around since then, finally reached Pondicherry. Since one month he has been very sick, lost his mobility. Somehow he was serving on the streets by charity. Snehan Home rescued him and provided residential care & support. Meanwhile, he was struggling to breathe normally and going through severe pain on the right side of his body. We took him to JIPMER casualty for medical treatment, after several tests and scans, the doctor found out that he has a big tumor on his lungs. Now he is under medical support at Snehan Home. He was asked to come for more medical tests on 4^th of March 2024.

The rejected is restored at Snehan Home

61 years old Mr.Raj is rescued from the Government Hospital on 10-2-2024. He is paralyzed for about three years on the left side, lost mobility and eyesight. On the 25^th of December 2023, he fainted and fell down from the staircase. When he woke up, he found himself in the hospital with bandaged around his leg. Because of his destitution the treatment was not fully met. The government authorities traced his family to unite with them, but the family rejected the call. About 45 days, the hospital authorities searched for residential care home but none could accept him with his condition. Finally, Snehan Home came forward to admit him in the residential care & support center. Now he feels safe & secure. All his basic needs are met at Snehan Home. 24 hours two care takers are supporting him on his improvement. At present he is undergoing medical support and physiotherapy in JIPMER.

The feeling of untouchable is the worst rejection

Feeling of untouchable is the worst rejection for a human begins. Once I met 75 years old Snehan beneficiary after the gap of six months, by then he had long hair and long beard. I asked him why you look like this. Why don’t you go for saloon? He became furious and scolded all the barbers in general, for since one month he approached many saloon guys to groom his hair but everyone refused to do it, in spite of agreeing to pay the same amount that they collect from others. This act of rejection hurt him so much, where can he go for grooming his hair? Taking bath or washing clothes he can try somehow but hair cut? Here at Snehan Home, every day our beneficiaries take bath, clean their cloths and have weekly hair dressing. Let’s value each other…

Little steps towards Mr.Poopathi’s happiness

Mr. Poopathi 61 years old man, once was homeless and helpless. He lived on the streets by means of charity. Loneliness, depression and threat of life was hunted him every movement of his street life. Five years back, he was rehabilitated from street life by Snehan, trained him in income-generation activities and was given employment and shelter. This changed his way of life; he became more responsible towards his work and faithful towards Snehan organization. Once, he didn’t have any ID of his own but now he has Aadhaar Card on his name, and bank account to save the earnings of labor. Of course this change of his character didn’t happen in a day or month but few years. Patients gives its fruit’s on its time. Snehan is happy to bring a change in the life of Mr.Poopathi. We are striving to reach many more homeless on the streets…
