Poverty is one of the most significant causes of loneliness among the elderly in India. According to a report by the United Nations, about 22% of India’s population lives below the poverty line. The lack of financial resources can lead to social isolation, as the elderly may not be able to afford social activities, transportation, or even basic necessities like food and shelter. They may feel ashamed or embarrassed to ask for help from their families, and this can lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness.

Old age s-relatedickness is another significant cause of loneliness among the elderly in India. As people age, they become more susceptible to chronic diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. These diseases can limit their mobility and make it difficult for them to carry out everyday activities. Additionally, chronic pain and discomfort can make it challenging for them to sleep, which can lead to feelings of depression and anxiety.

Family rejection is another common cause of loneliness among the elderly in India. In Indian culture, families are often expected to take care of their elderly members. However, this expectation is not always fulfilled, and some families may reject their elderly members or neglect their needs. This can be due to a variety of factors, including financial constraints, cultural norms, and the perception that elderly people are a burden on the family. As a result, many elderly people are left alone and feel socially isolated.

Loneliness is a significant problem among the elderly in India, and it can have severe effects on their physical and mental health. To address this issue, it is essential to create awareness about the importance of social inclusion for the elderly, provide financial support to those in need, and promote family support for elderly members. By doing so, we can help to reduce the loneliness and isolation and improve their quality of life.

Almost the last one-week torrent rain is pouring in many parts of South India. The worst affected areas are near the beaches and lowland areas. In 2015 sever rain hit Tamil Nadu especially the capital city which is Chennai. In that more than 500 people dead (listed ones) unlisted should be 5000, more than 1.8 lakh million people displaced and lost their belongings. Total calculated damages are 1 trillion USD. 

Now in the last one week south India is seeing continual rain falling. All the streets and roads of many cities are flooded. Have you ever thought about the homeless people sleeping on the streets? Where will they sleep in this kind of situation?. This kind of natural calamity claims more lives of homeless and destitute people especially old and sick in the streets . Metro cities in India are the survival place for many poor, old & sick people. We have home to sleep, any bad condition we can manage, but think of the disabled on the streets, blind on the streets. How can they go to a safe place in these kinds of conditions? The truth is many die and they are unaccounted.

A brave police woman saved a young man who was sleeping in the graveyard. Appreciation rising from social media. This person is lucky to get saved but, do you know many such helpless people die in unnoticed ways and pass this world without any trace?  For this kind of people, the government should take sufficient measures to save them and give them a joyful ending.  

Yes, our NGO wants to be part of this movement to save lives of the neglected and give joy of happy ending to the neglected people on the streets. Soon, we are going to start a home for the disabled and sick old destitute in Puducherry. Like minded people are welcome to serve and support.

The Covid 19 pandemic, looking back as numbers of affected and dying have decreased, can be called more of a pandemic as all of the state’s and central governments made a mess of the whole accord, disgraceful to say the least, (that’s my view and assessment of the handling of human dignity which I will share)

Definitely the poor, marginalized, sick & dying, Covid-19 doesn’t really scare them as much as hunger and starvation do.

Covid-19 created the global pandemic, and it has very unpredictable impacts on all sectors, economic and livelihood of the poor and marginalized of Pondicherry.

Though the lockdown may help in the spread of the virus, it still has a chronic impact on vulnerable populations. Thousands of poor lost their employment and suffer inequality and poverty. Especially the people who wait for tourists to buy handmade products, balloons, fruits, snacks, bags, cloths, a rickshaw puller, auto drivers, and beggars.

Particularly hit hard are the most important food systems (beggars, street poor, marginalized, handicapped, disabled dying…) Storage, market chains locally and marginally. Besides these, the public outcries are the images, news info. Of corpses drifting down the Ganges River, which Hindus consider holy! Have shocked us and the nation, reeling under the worst surge, since April, May 2021.

There was a video on news channels that was shot by someone driving on the bridge from where a dead body was dumped seemed startling. Why dead bodies were floated on the river is still being investigated.

Besides, there were the bodies buried, usually overnight, along the river beds. This is just some of the disaster I’ve been able to see I’m confident there are more.

Sadly enough there are some of the most painful instances that came to me. Covid-19 relatives, refusing acceptance of their own dead family members from hospitals. Bodies piled up in crematoriums, many deaths not officially recorded. The shortage/ short supply of gas and firewood, our age-old customs being pushed aside as crematoriums workers/employees most operating without a break, watch some of the frames of the crematoriums melt due to the rush, dumping of the dead.

Long and shot the people whom I have seen yesterday, they are no more today. This is life and it has no guarantee. How I wish, we humans share each other, care for each other for we brought nothing to this world and we will take nothing from this world. Come let’s reunite once again to rebuild our nation, state, community, and family.

For too long, we have been exploiting and destroying our planet’s ecosystems. This World Environment Day will kick off the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, a global mission to revive billions of hectares, from forests to farmlands, from the top of mountains to the depth of the sea.

Only with healthy ecosystems can we enhance people’s livelihoods, counteract climate change and stop the collapse of biodiversity. For a long time, plastic bags were used as a free and painless solution for carrying your weekly groceries and for a range of other purposes.  A lot of people think that paper bags are a good alternative, but unfortunately, this isn’t true as they still negatively affect the environment.

We can stop the collapse of biodiversity in many ways. The best alternative to plastic bags is reusable bags, which save 11 barrels of oil. In the year 2006, a team of us were at work collecting data on drug addicts around Hyderabad and in Secundrabad. My eyes fell on a person, who climbed on a fence and landed on the footpath. It was a summer mid-day, a beggar was napping under a tree on the footpath, this guy after jumping the fence, bent down put his hand on the pocket of the beggar took out all the money, and climbed back. This scene was seen by more than 3 dozen people but no one dared to question the thief or came forward to get that poor guy living. Do you know 99% of the homeless beggars face harassment, beatings, and looted every day by the local rowdies? My old beneficiary used to tell me that every day at night a team of boys would march about on the streets and wake him up for the money or cigarette, if they don’t give or even if they don’t have, these guys would beat this old man. Yes, this is the reality.

A 48 years old Murugan (name changed) was deserted by his family due to an extra-marital relationship by his wife.  He was depressed and ashamed to live in his village, reached Puducherry, he collects waste to make his living. He was sleeping in a particular street in the night, where a team of robbers came to robe his little, since he dint had more, he was beaten very badly; he was left with multiple injuries on the face and on the legs. Now he finds it difficult even to walk.  This kind of act not only happens to him but many around. How I wish, that we could give our voice to such kind.

Sorry Saranya
As there was no toilet in the government office where she worked, Saranya, a disabled girl who went to the toilet of the nearest house, fell into the toilet tank and died!
Who is responsible for this? Who should give friendly environments? We should also talk about whether the toilets which are with the problem of not having toilets in government offices or the existing toilet setup are usable condition?

Only if we ask the women employees of that office, you will know their sufferings. Clean India is not only about posing and taking pictures like gathering in the streets but also the respective office officials should realize that it is necessary to maintain clean toilets and other places in their office.
More importantly, women working in the office should raise their voices together for such needs.

Kanchipuram-06 / December / 2020 / Sunday,

Saranya, the youngest daughter of milk merchant Shanmugam, who belongs to Kanchipuram Editor Nagar area, is a twenty-four-year-old disabled person, Selected in the Group Exam held two years ago and joined as Manager of Government Agricultural Expansion Center Warehouse, Kalakkattur area, Kanchipuram Taluk. The office where Saranya worked, had no toilet facility, she was struggling to go to the toilet. She has told her parents several times that she doesn’t want to go to work because she doesn’t have a toilet facility in her office. Saranya has gone to work without any other way after her parents insisted that she must go to work because of the government job. In the current situation of continuous rain, Saranya has gone to the house near the office to use a toilet, due to heavy rain and bad quality of construction, the tiles broke and fell into an eight-feet-deep septic tank and drowned in wastewater when she stepped on the open space of a septic tank which was not covered with a suitable lid. What an injustice that the government did to Saranya?

Since Snehan works closely with disabled old adults, we have seen and know their struggles.

What is easily available on our plate to eat, there is someone really working hard to produce it. Wherein every other product is being sold on MRP (Maximum Retail Price), farmers are still struggling to sell their products on MSP (Minimum Support Price), which is at-least guaranteed through APMCs. The new Farm bills aren’t opening any new doors to the Farmers; rather they are creating opportunities and are more in favor of big corporate houses.

The time and energy our farmers spent to feed our nation is immense money can’t be replaced. If we are living healthy life means, it’s because of their effort.

Friends, Farmers have really worked hard in converting these mountains and plateaus to fields. If these bills are getting implemented, then in the next four or five years the APMCs will disappear, the Farmers will become labors in their own fields and later on, they will end up selling off their land for their livelihood.

We had already lost our EDUCATION Sector to private players, HEALTH Sector to private players, TELECOM sector, and many more to private players. Railways on the way…This is the same game against Farmers, please extend your minimum support to Farmers in strengthening their voice.
